Johns Creek Patch: JCA Releases First High School App Competition

Students Can Compete To Create Apps Promoting Small Businesses

Johns Creek Advantage, the economic development arm of the city, is organizing the competition among local high school students.

Johns Creek Advantage has released the first-ever Johns Creek high school student app competition.

The competition, presented by Comcast Business, asks students to develop an app that would highlight and promote small businesses in the city.

The idea behind the app and the competition stems from the fact that Johns Creek students attend four of the top public high schools in the state.

“As Johns Creek has the brightest students in the state, why not engage their minds and creative insights to create a truly unique app that would benefit local residents and businesses alike?” Johns Creek Advantage asks in its news release.

Prizes are $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place; half of the reward will go to the teacher or the school, and the winning team will receive the rest.

Apps are due by Jan. 29, 2016.

Esri, a developer of geographic information systems (GIS), is on board as the technology sponsor for the competition and thus their mapping software will be utilized in the app. Additionally, Esri is providing technology support to assist with the participant’s understanding of their tools.

Esri has even offered additional analytical tools to the students for free. These tools can be accessed with credits that each participant will receive.

For more information, visit the contest’s website. If you have sponsorship or competition inquiries, email Bethany L. Hountz at blavigno@johnscreekadvantage.org.
